Now for all of you boys out there who are already planning your winter get-ups (so many of you, I know) the fashion calendar has been kicked off with the Fall 2010 menswear collection’s debuting across the world. Past years have always been suggestive that a classic suit is the way to go, but if you don’t work at Vogue or come from a family that entitles you to the first name ‘Prince’ then a suit is usually a bit farfetched for you in winter. Unless ofcorse you take inspiration from this year’s fall collections.
At Costume National we saw dark suits with raw edges, slouchy trousers and motorcycle boots perfect for all you ‘I can’t be bothered to shine my shoe’ kind of guys. Miuccia Prada showed us bright colours matched with neutral undertones and disturbing but delightful prints. And at Burberry Prorsum (kings of the trench) we saw classic tees being paired with oversized double-breasted wool overcoats.
Theatric god John Galliano portrayed the Fall 2010 male as a modern Sherlock Holmes. Incorporating applaudable tailoring with a hint of feminine elegance, Galliano played on his trademark unconventional design ethics with an obvious attention to the waist. Rick Owens continued his trademark futurism in his latest collection, much like that of Galliano’s with obscure symmetries, gothic experimentation and a focus on layers.
So boys, throw out all your leather and those woolen knits and make some room for a good old classic coat in your wardrobe as it is obvious that this year’s key trend is all about the outer-wear. And according to Gucci, Lou Reed might not be the only velvet your hearing about this winter.
